If you are searching for a Translate and Adapt alternative for your Shopify store, the reason is usually simple: you have outgrown its limits. Translate and Adapt is Shopify’s own free translation app, and it does a genuinely good job for small multilingual stores. But per Shopify’s Help Center, as of July 2026, its auto-translation is capped at 2 languages, and it has no glossary or auto-sync. Once you expand into a third market or start editing content regularly, that manual upkeep adds up.
Disclosure: We built LocaleFlow, so we have a perspective here. We’ll stick to verifiable facts from Shopify’s Help Center and the Shopify App Store.
This page covers where Translate and Adapt works well, where its 2-language cap and manual workflow create friction, and how LocaleFlow takes a different path. For a broader view of all translation apps, visit our comparison hub.
Why Shopify Merchants Look for a Translate and Adapt Alternative
Translate and Adapt is built by Shopify and stores everything natively, so it is a natural starting point. The friction shows up as you scale.
The most cited reason is the language cap. Per Shopify’s Help Center, as of July 2026, Translate and Adapt auto-translates into a maximum of 2 languages. You can still add unlimited languages manually, but every language beyond the second requires you to write or paste translations yourself. For a store targeting the EU, where five to ten languages is common, that is a lot of manual work.
The second reason is upkeep. Translate and Adapt does not auto-sync when you later edit source content. Change a product description, and the translation does not update on its own. You have to revisit each affected language and re-translate. For stores that update pricing, descriptions, or seasonal copy often, this becomes a recurring chore.
The third reason is control. Translate and Adapt has no glossary or term-management feature. There is no way to lock brand names, enforce consistent terminology, or mark specific terms as do-not-translate across your catalog.
What Translate and Adapt Does Well
Translate and Adapt is a solid free tool, and it deserves credit for what it does right.
It is free and made by Shopify. There is no separate subscription. It is a first-party app, so it fits neatly into the Shopify admin and is maintained by Shopify itself.
It is native. Per Shopify’s Help Center, as of July 2026, Translate and Adapt stores translations natively inside Shopify. Your content lives in your admin, not on a third-party server, which is exactly the approach LocaleFlow also uses.
It is easy to start. Auto-translation covers products, collections, blog posts, pages, URL handles, and theme settings for your two auto-translated languages. For a small store adding one or two languages, setup is quick.
It handles the core catalog. The machine-translated output gives you a working first draft to review before publishing, which is the right workflow for any AI translation.
Where Translate and Adapt Falls Short
The same simplicity that makes Translate and Adapt easy to start also limits it as you grow.
The 2-language auto-translation cap. Per Shopify’s Help Center, as of July 2026, auto-translation is limited to 2 languages. Beyond that, every language is manual. For merchants expanding into several markets, this is the single biggest constraint.
No auto-sync on edits. When you update source content, translations do not refresh automatically. You have to track what changed and re-translate it by hand, language by language.
No glossary or term control. There is no glossary, no custom prompt, and no do-not-translate blacklist. Brand names and product terms can be translated inconsistently across languages, and you have no central way to enforce your preferred wording.
Coverage gaps. Per Shopify’s Help Center, as of July 2026, Translate and Adapt does not auto-translate store policies (manual only), collection filters, forms, payment method instructions, product images, tags, or third-party app content. Some of these matter a lot for a fully localized storefront. Our ROI calculator can help you weigh the cost of that manual work at scale.
How LocaleFlow Takes a Different Approach
LocaleFlow was built exclusively for Shopify, and like Translate and Adapt it stores every translation natively through Shopify’s Translations API. The difference is in automation and control.
Auto-translate into more than 2 languages. On LocaleFlow’s Global plan, auto-translation covers every language Shopify Markets supports, so you are not stuck at Translate and Adapt’s two-language automatic cap. (Local covers 2 languages; Global is unlimited.)
Clear tiers, no metering. LocaleFlow has clear tiers: $49 per month for 2 languages (Local) or $150 per month for unlimited languages (Global), both with unlimited words and unlimited products. On Global, adding a sixth or tenth language does not change your bill, and there are no word counts or per-word overages on either tier.
Auto-sync on content changes. Update a product description and the translations update automatically. Add new products at any hour and they are translated without manual intervention.
Glossary, custom prompts, and blacklist. Control tone, formality, and brand-specific terminology across your entire catalog. Lock brand names, enforce consistent terms, and blacklist words that should never be translated.
Deeper metafield and metaobject control. LocaleFlow offers field-level metafield translation and full metaobject translation, so size guides, ingredient lists, and structured content are translated alongside your products and pages.
To be fair: if you only need one or two languages and are comfortable maintaining them manually, Translate and Adapt is free and native, and it is the right call. LocaleFlow makes sense when you want automation across several languages and consistent terminology. Making the Switch
Because both Translate and Adapt and LocaleFlow store translations natively inside Shopify, switching is painless. Your existing Shopify translations are preserved. LocaleFlow reads them, so there is no data loss.
- Install LocaleFlow from the Shopify App Store.
- Keep your existing translations. LocaleFlow reads what Translate and Adapt already stored in Shopify, so nothing is lost.
- Run auto-translate for your additional languages. LocaleFlow scans your catalog and translates every language you need, not just two.
- Configure your glossary and custom prompts. Set brand voice, tone, and any terms that should remain untranslated.
- Enable auto-sync. From here, every content change is automatically translated across all your languages.
Because the research is clear on why this matters, it is worth remembering the demand behind localization: CSA Research found that 76% of shoppers prefer buying in their native language, and 40% will not buy in other languages. Reaching more than two markets automatically is how you serve that demand without the manual grind. For a full comparison of translation apps, see our comparison hub and our pricing page.
